State Sub-Junior Boxing Championship Concludes in Shibpur; Bengal’s Rising Boxers Secure Tickets to National Championship in Jalandhar
Howrah, June 15 (Md Shabib Alam) The two-day State Sub-Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Boxing Championship 2026 concluded in a festive atmosphere at the boxing ring of Shibpur Police Lines in Howrah. Organized by the West Bengal Progressive Boxing Association, the tournament witnessed the participation of more than 100 talented boxers from 12 districts across the state, who displayed remarkable skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
The championship featured thrilling bouts across various weight categories for both boys and girls, keeping spectators engaged throughout the event. The competition was marked by intense contests, impressive strategies, and confident performances. Winners of the tournament earned the opportunity to represent West Bengal at the upcoming National Boxing Championship to be held in Jalandhar, Punjab.
The closing ceremony was attended by Acting Secretary of the West Bengal Progressive Boxing Association Kunal Saha, President of the Howrah District Boxing Association Mukul Nath Tiwari, Secretary Goswami Singh, Bhatpara MLA Pawan Singh, and noted social worker Akhilesh Singh. Special guests included Soumya Shankar Bose, Kaushik Biswas, Pramod Singh, Bishwaranjan Das, and renowned filmmaker and music director Abhijit Pal.
Speakers at the event emphasized that the primary objective of the championship was to identify talented young boxers at the grassroots level and provide them with opportunities to establish themselves on national and international platforms. They described the performances of the young athletes as highly promising for the future of boxing in the state.
